This large refectory table is a nineteenth-century dining table in the Jacobean Revival style, fashioned from solid oak. The piece presents a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish. The rectangular top sits above a frieze carved with foliate motifs, supported by heavy, elaborately turned legs connected near the base by a perimeter box stretcher. A line of small, carved beading runs directly beneath the main frieze edge. The stripped surface shows the natural grain of the wood. Measuring 77 cm high, 245 cm wide, and 101 cm deep, the table provides generous surface space for seating multiple people. In a contemporary home, this imposing dining table suits a spacious kitchen or dining room, functioning well for everyday family meals as well as larger gatherings.

A refectory table is a long, narrow wooden dining table originally designed for communal dining in monastic refectories during the Middle Ages. The design was later adopted in noble residences during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, characterised by heavy stretchers and decorative carving.

Traditional refectory tables are constructed from solid native hardwoods, most commonly oak or elm, using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. They feature heavy perimeter or centre stretchers, sturdy turned or bulbous legs, and hand-carved friezes along the apron.

Authentic historic refectory tables exhibit hand-planed top boards, pegged construction without modern screws, and uneven wear along the stretchers where diners rested their feet to avoid cold stone floors.

A refectory table functions as an anchor piece in a dining room or open-plan living space. Pairing it with contemporary upholstered seating or modern chairs creates a balanced contrast between historic timber textures and clean modern lines.

Regular maintenance involves dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Spillages should be wiped immediately, and the table should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
