This Edwardian wall mounted clothes airer originates from around 1900, bringing functional utility and simple rustic charm to a home. The piece consists of a cast iron wall bracket finished in an off-white tone, fitted with a metal mounting hook and an ornate decorative upper terminal. Attached to this bracket are seven tapered wooden laths acting as fanning articulated arms, all painted in a matching off-white shade. The surface shows visible age-related wear including chipping paint and surface texture imperfections across the painted elements. When fully expanded, the articulated arrangement provides multiple horizontal drying arms spread in a fan configuration. This item measures 13 cm high, 58.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep in practical terms. It suits installation on a narrow wall space in a utility room, laundry area, boot room, or kitchen for traditional garment drying and storage.

FAQs

Wall-mounted clothes airers gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as space-saving utility fixtures in domestic sculleries and laundries.

These airers were typically constructed using a heavy cast iron mounting bracket paired with smooth wooden laths that allowed damp fabrics to dry efficiently.

Authentic pieces feature cast iron wall plates often stamped with foundry names or patent marks, accompanied by articulated wooden arms showing natural age-related wear.

An airer can be installed on a utility room or boot room wall to provide functional linen drying space while adding historic industrial character.

Maintain the cast iron by keeping it dry to prevent oxidisation, and wipe down the wooden laths with a soft cloth to protect painted or natural finishes.
