This 19th-century country house side table originates from the Aesthetic Movement, designed by H Ogden of Manchester. Constructed from walnut and ebonised wood with a pine polygon top, the piece displays a warm brown colour with dark contrasting bands on the turned uprights and fluted legs. It stands 69 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. The frame incorporates a lower tier shelf featuring a patterned textile upholstery in tones of yellow, beige, and brown, supported by legs terminating in small castors. Decorative drop-down wooden fringe elements hang from the edges of the octagonal top, alongside vertical ribbing on the columns. Practical for everyday use, this table fits comfortably at the end of a sofa or as an accent piece in a living room or hallway. The two-tier construction provides both a display surface and a lower shelf for books or decorative objects. The current fabric on the top surface shows a textured, patterned finish ready for use or custom recovery, while the overall timber exhibits traditional wear consistent with nineteenth-century furniture of this style.

Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasises craftsmanship, natural forms, geometric simplification, and artistic expression, frequently featuring ebonised accents, turned uprights, and integrated textile panels.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilised hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often paired with ebonised turned legs, brass castors, and integrated decorative needlepoint or beaded textile work.

Look for period-accurate maker marks or brass badges from established cabinetmakers, fine wood turning, hand-carved details, original brass castors, and authentic period joinery like mortise and tenon joints.

Position the piece as an occasional accent table beside a sofa or in an alcove, pairing its rich wood tones and intricate textile detail with neutral modern upholstery to create visual contrast.

Dust the timber with a soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax periodically, while keeping integrated textiles away from direct sunlight to avoid fading and clean fabrics gently using a soft brush.
