This fascinating set of artists' materials dates to the second half of the 19th Century and is in a remarkably good state of preservation. The broad range of pigments and accessories contained within the original black japanned tin box appears to be for the decorating of porcelain - the notated porcelain panel that provides the artist with a guide to the mixing of colours is of particular interest. A brass manufacturer's trade label is attached to the lidded compartment that contains the recessed mixing palette. Lechertier Barbe & Co. manufactured and supplied their clients with various artists' materials. Some of the most famous painters of the day, such as Whistler, John Singer Sargent and Claude Monet patronized their premises at 60 Regent Street, London.
