Gorgeous Pair of Spode Creamware Dessert Serving Dishes Patt. 1783 C.1811

18th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A delightful pair of Spode creamware rectangular dessert dishes decorated in the European style. Iron red "pluck and dust" transfer printed borders run around the rim and inner edge of the base, the former of a stylised flowering vine sandwiched between double tramlines, and the latter a hexagonal cell border. To each wall and the centre are hand painted five charming sprays of garden flowers. Very well executed, in fabulously rich and bright enamels, they are really quite joyful. Painted pattern number to the bases "1783" and a small decorator's asterisk mark just inside each foot rim. The don't have the full SPODE impressed mark, which was rarely applied to all pieces in a dessert service, but they do have the central impressed D mark which is often found on these services, both alone and commonly alongside the SPODE mark. c.1811.

Overlap joins in the transfer borders: early hand-applied tissue transfer techniques.
Hand-enamelled floral sprays: distinct individual brushwork across both pieces.
Smooth earthenware foot rim with gentle shelf rubbing: honest light handling.

This pair of Georgian Regency creamware dessert dishes originates from around 1811 in the English Country House style. Each rectangular piece is finished with a cream glaze and decorated with a hand-painted floral spray centre, geometric inner border, and trailing leaf outer border in iron red, green, pink, and yellow enamels. The items display crisp iron red transfer printed borders, clear painted pattern numbers on the bases, and small decorator's asterisk marks inside the foot rims alongside central impressed D marks. The dishes measure 21.6 cm long, 16.0 cm wide, and 3.2 cm high. They function practically on a sideboard top for serving desserts during formal dinners or casual gatherings in a dining room today.

Creamware, a refined earthenware featuring a warm cream tone glaze, was perfected in England during the mid-to-late 18th century. Manufacturers like Spode introduced hand-painted enamel and transfer-printed patterns during the Georgian and Regency periods, producing lightweight yet durable dessert sets for fashionable dining.

Regency creamware was produced using refined white ball clay mixed with flint, fired to a hard body, and finished with a clear lead glaze. Decorative elements were typically painted or printed by hand using ceramic enamel pigments before a final lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces usually feature impressed or painted manufacturer marks on the base, alongside hand-painted pattern numbers. Period examples also display characteristic light body weight, fine craze lines in the lead glaze, and authentic wear on foot rims.

These pieces can be displayed vertically on plate stands inside a dresser, arranged on a sideboard top, or grouped on a wall as decorative art. Their warm neutral base and classic motifs integrate well into traditional dining rooms and country kitchen schemes.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft non-abrasive cloth. Avoid immersing pieces for prolonged periods, keep them away from dishwashers or microwaves, and store them securely to prevent rim chipping.
