This William IV mahogany writing or library table combines traditional utility with refined 19th Century craftsmanship in warm brown timber. The rectangular top has an inset dark leather surface with a gilt tooled border and moulded edges, set above two frieze drawers with figured flame mahogany drawer fronts and original turned wooden knobs. The base comprises open shaped end-standard supports with turned knob decorations, resting on plinths with flattened bun feet and hidden castors. Measuring 74 cm high, 132 cm wide and 62 cm deep, the table provides ample surface area for working or reading. Positioned in a study, gentleman's library or home office, the table functions as a central desk or writing station. The freestanding design allows placement in the middle of a room, while the shallow depth ensures it fits comfortably against a wall or beneath a window. The classic proportions and rich timber tones complement both period interiors and contemporary workspaces requiring a traditional wooden desk.

William IV period furniture, spanning approximately 1830 to 1837, bridges the classical proportions of the Regency era and the robust ornamentation of the early Victorian period, often featuring substantial turned supports and rich mahogany veneers.

Tables from this era were typically constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over timber frameworks, frequently featuring gilded or blind-tooled leather writing surfaces inset into the tabletop.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original turned wooden knobs, natural age patina on the timber, and solid end-standard supports typical of 1830s cabinetmaking.

Pair the dark mahogany frame with neutral wall palettes, contemporary desk lighting, and an upholstered task chair to create a balanced work space.

Dust the timber with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, while cleaning the leather inset with a specialised leather conditioner to prevent drying.
