Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Impressed circular mark on the base: the standard Mason's ironstone mark from about 1815.
Hand-enamelled Imari palette over printed outlines: early nineteenth-century decorative work.
Individually hand-pierced apertures in the domed lid: pre-mechanised piercing methods.
Gentle wear to the rim gilding: natural handling over two centuries.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian Regency pot pourri vase originates from circa 1820 and stands at 14.5 cm high. Formed of ironstone ceramic, the body features a footed pedestal base, twin side handles with gilt highlights, and a perforated domed lid topped with a turned finial. The glazed surface displays a vibrant multicolour palette of terracotta, cobalt blue, and gold, decorated with hand-painted Imari floral motifs, scrolling foliage, and patterned borders. The base shows an impressed circular mark reading 'PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA'. An underglaze chip to the knop occurred during manufacture prior to glazing and gilding. Suitable for display in a traditional interior, this lidded vessel sits neatly upon a mantelpiece, sideboard, or occasional table. The compact footprint and classic form make it an accessible decorative accent for a living room, study, or hallway. The rich glaze and gilded detailing catch the light, offering a colourful focal point among curated collections of ceramics or antique porcelain.

FAQs

Patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason, ironstone china was a durable vitreous earthenware created as a competitive alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, often decorated with vibrant Imari patterns.

These pieces were crafted from dense ironstone earthenware, hand-painted with ceramic enamels, finished with overglaze gilding, and designed with a perforated dome top to allow fragranced botanicals to diffuse scent.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed or printed makers marks on the underside displaying terms like Masons Patent Ironstone China, along with distinctive hand-applied Imari colour palettes and heavy vitreous weight.

Display this decorative vessel as a standalone accent on a fireplace mantelpiece, layer it alongside leather-bound books on a shelf, or use it as a tabletop focal point on a console table.

Dust gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners or abrasive sponges that could strip the delicate overglaze gilding and hand-painted enamels.
