This William IV hall table comes from the Regency period, shaped from mahogany in a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish. The rectangular top sits above a plain frieze, backed by an architectural triangular pediment featuring a central shield cartouche. Four turned and tapering legs support the frame, finished with ring turnings and ball feet, showing natural surface grain and light wear consistent with age. Measuring 122 cm wide by 41 cm deep and 102 cm high, the table provides a narrow surface for practical use. Positioned beside the front door, the hall table works well in an entrance hallway or passage to hold keys, post, and decorative items. The compact depth allows it to fit against narrow walls without obstructing pathways, while the substantial backboard protects the wall behind it. The warm timber tones integrate easily into traditional and transitional interior schemes, serving as a functional surface in everyday household circulation spaces.

William IV furniture dates from 1830 to 1837, bridging the Regency and Victorian eras. Characterised by bold turned legs, substantial proportions, and high-quality dark woods such as mahogany, this style emphasizes classical symmetry with simpler ornamentation than later Victorian designs.

Tables from this period were predominantly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany and flame mahogany veneers. Internal framing and drawer linings typically utilised secondary native woods such as pine or oak, assembled using traditional dovetail joinery and mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved details, heavy turned legs, and pedimented or carved backboards. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-sawn timber marks, natural oxidisation of the wood, and historical joinery techniques such as pegged joints or hand-cut screws.

A classic hall table functions effectively in a narrow entrance hall or corridor. Pairing the dark timber with modern artwork, a table lamp, or neutral ceramic vases creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics.

Mahogany surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Applying a high-grade natural beeswax polish once or twice a year protects the original finish, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators prevents wood shrinkage and cracking.
