Antique Mahogany Round Dining Table with Figured Crossbanded Top

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique mahogany round dining table of outstanding quality, dating to circa 1920, featuring a beautifully figured mahogany top with an exceptionally attractive crossbanded border. This elegant circular dining table combines the refined proportions of traditional English furniture with the timeless appeal of richly polished mahogany.

The magnificent 160 cm diameter top displays beautifully figured mahogany veneers, with rich, flowing grain patterns and warm reddish-brown tones. The outer edge is enhanced by a broad decorative crossbanded border, carefully selected for its contrasting grain and framed by fine stringing, creating a particularly sophisticated finish. The beautifully polished surface brings out the depth and natural character of the timber.

The table stands on a substantial central pedestal with a turned column and four elegantly swept sabre legs. Each leg is finished with a brass cap and castor, providing both an attractive decorative detail and ease of movement. The pedestal design allows generous legroom and comfortable seating around the entire table.

An especially desirable feature is the tilting top, allowing the table to be raised vertically when not in use, a practical arrangement traditionally associated with fine English pedestal dining tables.

With its generous circular proportions, this impressive antique dining table can comfortably accommodate eight people, making it an excellent choice for both formal entertaining and everyday dining. The absence of corner legs creates an inviting and sociable dining arrangement, while the beautifully figured mahogany makes the table an impressive centrepiece.

A superb example of early 20th-century English furniture, equally suited to a traditional country house dining room or a sophisticated contemporary interior, where its rich colour, exceptional craftsmanship and elegant silhouette would provide a wonderful contrast to modern surroundings.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition with appropriate age-related wear consistent with its age and use. The mahogany retains a beautiful colour and polished finish, with attractive grain throughout.

This antique dining table dates to 1920 and follows a Regency style. It is made from mahogany and brass with a warm brown colour and a polished finish. The circular top features a figured grain pattern, a broad crossbanded border, and fine stringing. It stands on four splayed legs with brass cap castors and has a tilt-top mechanism that allows the surface to be raised vertically. The table measures 73.5 cm high, 160 cm wide, and 160 cm deep. In a contemporary or traditional home, this piece serves as a dining table in a dining room, seating eight people comfortably for formal or everyday use. When tilted upright, it can be stored against a wall to save floor space.

A Regency tilt-top dining table is a circular or oval dining table featuring a latch mechanism that allows the tabletop to pivot vertically against its central pedestal. Popularised in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, this design allowed formal dining rooms to be cleared for social gatherings or dancing when the table was not required.

These tables are primarily constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often incorporating decorative crossbanded borders made from satinwood or rosewood. The central column rests on splayed legs fitted with brass toe caps and castors, while hand-cut dovetails and brass tilt-latch mechanisms secure the top.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces, original brass tilt-top latches, and age-consistent wear on the brass castors. The timber grain on the top will show natural depth and patina, while the joinery under the table base will feature period timber blocks and screws.

A circular mahogany table can be paired with contemporary upholstered dining chairs to soften the traditional timber finish. Positioning the table beneath a modern pendant light creates a focal point that blends classic period craftsmanship with modern design elements.

Keep the wood surface clear of direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the grain to preserve the original finish.
