This pair of nineteenth-century Anglo-Ceylonese colonial occasional tables follows a design by Thomas King, each shaped with a hexagonal top and standing on carved scroll pedestal legs. Fashioned in solid dark brown ebony, the tops display geometric starburst parquetry inlaid with specimen woods including calamander, teak, tamarind, ironwood and palmwood, along with bone inlay and a single frieze drawer. One table remains in antique condition while the other exhibits inlay losses, and both display detailed edge mouldings, carved friezes and shaped feet. Each table measures 76 cm high by 49 cm wide and 49 cm deep. Positioned at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, these side tables suit a gentleman's library, study or drawing room. They provide a practical surface for lamps, books and decorative objects while bringing nineteenth-century colonial craftsmanship into daily home use.

Ceylonese colonial furniture refers to decorative pieces manufactured in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) during the British colonial period. These items typically combine traditional European furniture forms with local woodcarving techniques and dense native hardwoods like ebony, satinwood, and calamander.

These tables primarily feature native ebony for the carved structural components, paired with mosaic, parquetry, or marquetry tops constructed from indigenous specimen woods, ivory, bone, or porcupine quill accents.

Authentic items are notable for the exceptional weight and density of solid ebony, highly detailed hand-carved relief work such as scrolling foliage, and precisely fitted starburst or geometric specimen wood tops.

These dark, structured tables act as dramatic accent pieces when positioned alongside contemporary sofas, between armchairs, or flanking a mantelpiece to add historical weight and texture to a living space.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or harsh detergents. Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent wood movement, and periodically apply a high-grade beeswax polish to preserve the timber nourish.
