Antique Figured Mahogany 8 Seater Circular Pedestal Dining Table with Rosewood and Satinwood Crossbanding

1900 - 1920
Description

An antique early 20th century circular dining table of outstanding quality, beautifully crafted in richly figured mahogany with striking rosewood and satinwood crossbanding, dating to circa 1920. A splendid and generously proportioned example, combining the elegance of Regency-inspired design with the exceptional decorative appeal of finely selected timbers.

The magnificent circular top displays beautifully figured mahogany veneers with a rich, warm colour and attractive natural grain. The perimeter is enhanced by a broad band of richly figured rosewood, bordered on either side by contrasting satinwood crossbanding, creating a particularly striking decorative effect. The beautifully polished surface showcases the quality of the veneers and the intricate craftsmanship of the crossbanded border.

The table is supported by a substantial central turned pedestal, raised on four elegantly swept and reeded sabre legs terminating in brass-capped castors. The graceful curvature of the legs provides an attractive contrast to the impressive circular top, whilst the central pedestal design allows for comfortable seating without the obstruction of corner legs.

Measuring an impressive 166 cm in diameter, this splendid table will accommodate eight diners, making it ideal for both everyday dining and more formal entertaining. The circular design encourages conversation and creates a wonderfully sociable dining arrangement, whilst its elegant proportions make it an impressive centrepiece for a dining room.

A particularly handsome and decorative example of early 20th century English cabinetmaking, this magnificent table would complement both traditional interiors and contemporary settings, where its rich mahogany colour and striking crossbanded detail would create a wonderful focal point.

Condition Report

The beautifully figured mahogany top retains a rich colour and attractive polished finish, with the contrasting rosewood and satinwood crossbanding presenting particularly well. An antique 1920 circular pedestal dining table is constructed from figured mahogany, rosewood, satinwood, and brass. The Regency style design presents a rich warm brown timber colour with a high-gloss polished finish and intricate crossbanded borders around the wide top. Four splayed reeded legs extend from a central turned pedestal base and terminate in brass-capped castor feet. The surface displays natural wood grain patterns and reflections from its glossy finish. Measuring 74 cm high and 166 cm wide, the table seats eight people comfortably around its central pedestal configuration without corner leg obstructions. It serves as a dining room centrepiece for family meals and formal entertaining, pairing naturally with traditional or contemporary interior settings.

A pedestal dining table is supported by one or more central vertical columns rather than individual legs placed at the corners. This design originated in the late 18th century to improve legroom and maximize seating capacity around a circular or oval top.

Traditional crossbanded furniture utilizes a primary timber, such as mahogany or walnut, overlaid with narrow veneer borders where the wood grain runs grain-perpendicular to the edge. Complementary accent woods like rosewood, satinwood, or boxwood are frequently used to create distinct visual borders.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery, solid timber shrinkage marks, original brass hardware or castors, and unevenness in hand-planed underside surfaces. The grain pattern on dense West Indian or South American mahogany from this era typically exhibits a deep figure distinct from modern plantation timber.

Place a circular mahogany table in the centre of a room to establish symmetry, pairing it with contemporary upholstered chairs to balance the dark timber tone. Complement the wood finish with light wall paint, modern neutral tableware, and an overhanging pendant light.

Maintain wood veneers by keeping the furniture away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp environments to prevent lifting or cracking. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, avoiding silicone-based sprays.
