This large decorative Chinese porcelain ginger jar and cover dates from circa 1970. The traditional baluster form features a vibrant cobalt blue ground painted with flowering vines, colourful gourds, scrolling foliage, and a central butterfly pattern, rendered in shades of green, turquoise, pink, orange, and yellow. The shoulders include a continuous band of stylised motifs in pastel shades, while a lappet border runs around the base. The original domed lid displays fruiting vines and foliage, topped by a pointed finial with orange detailing. The jar measures 50 cm high and 28 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this item works well as a statement piece displayed on a sideboard top, large table, or cabinet within an English Country House interior. The object stands securely on a flat base and provides a functional lidded vessel for decorative display.

Originally used in ancient China for storing and transporting spices, oil, and salt, these jars evolved over time into highly decorative ceramic vessels prized across international markets.

These vessels are crafted from kaolin clay, shaped on a wheel or in moulds, fired at high temperatures, and hand-decorated using vitreous glazes or overglaze enamels.

Identification relies on examining the unglazed foot rim for clay composition, evaluating brushwork technique, checking glaze characteristics under magnification, and observing historical reign marks.

A statement ginger jar functions as a focal point when displayed on a sideboard, styled within a mantlepiece composition, or grouped with complementary ceramics on a console table.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, and clean gently with lukewarm water and a neutral soap, avoiding harsh chemicals that can damage delicate overglaze enamel decoration.
