French Empire "Tric‑trac" Table, Circa 1810

18th century
Description

A fine French Empire "tric‑trac" games table, circa 1800, crafted in richly figured flame mahogany with walnut secondary timbers.

The table features a reversible top: one side a green baize gaming surface, the reverse a writing surface, sitting over an inlaid tric‑trac / backgammon board with alternating points in contrasting woods typical of early 19th‑century French work.

The carcass is constructed in walnut, with flame mahogany veneers chosen for their dramatic figuring and warm tone. A single drawer provides storage for counters and playing pieces. The table stands on elegant tapered legs in the restrained Empire style, with clean lines and classical proportions.

The piece retains an excellent patina, with the baize and veneers in good order, and presents beautifully as both a functional games table and a decorative statement piece.

This French Empire tric-trac games table dates from circa 1810 and is made from flame mahogany with walnut secondary timbers, brass, ebony, and bone in a warm brown colour. The rectangular top incorporates a sunken central backgammon board with alternating inlaid gaming points in contrasting woods, surrounded by a border set with brass eyelets and small square inlays. Single drawers with drop handles sit on the sides, supported on square tapered legs. Position this table in a gentleman's library, study, or an empty corner of a living room to function as a compact games station or occasional desk. The design suits period or classic interior schemes where traditional games equipment and fine timber furniture are required.

A tric-trac table is a specialised French gaming table developed in the eighteenth century for playing tric-trac, a game related to backgammon. These tables feature a sunken central board with inlaid points, surrounded by a border with circular brass eyelets used for scoring.

Empire period games tables were constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany and walnut. The interior gaming boards feature marquetry points made from contrasting woods such as ebony and holly, alongside brass mounts, brass eyelets, and ivory or bone counters.

Authentic pieces from the French Empire era display Neoclassical proportions, square tapered legs, brass rim eyelets around the gaming tray, side drawers for game pieces, and hand-cut inlaid marquetry on the central play surface.

A tric-trac table works effectively as an occasional side table, hall console, or accent piece in a study or living area, offering historical interest alongside contemporary furnishings.

Position the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood expansion or veneer movement. Clean by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain.
