Antique Inlaid Mahogany Leather Top Writing / Side Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful and elegant antique inlaid mahogany leather top writing / side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920’s.

It is of extremely fine quality with a gorgeous and useful design. This is a great size to be used as a small desk or as a console side table. It stands on fluted sabre shaped legs with a stretchered base, the mahogany has lovely satin wood inlays throughout. The brass handles on the drawers have intricate details and are designed as lions heads. The top is cross banded and the drawers have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. There is a lovely inset leather writing surface with tooled edges, and the back of this is nicely finished, so it can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is superb throughout, with just some minor wear and patina to be seen on the leather.

This Edwardian writing and side table originates from England and dates from the 1920 period. Constructed from warm brown mahogany with satinwood inlays, the piece incorporates an inset green leather top with gilt-tooled edges, a cross-banded surface, and a single drawer fitted with brass ring handles. Further details visible include slender reeded legs, sabre-shaped feet, and a curved X-stretcher connecting the base, along with marquetry decoration on the drawer and side panels. The table measures 74 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. Suitable for an empty corner, study, or hallway, this compact furniture item functions well as a small writing desk or console side table. The finished back allows placement in the center of a room away from walls, offering practical surface space for everyday use while displaying traditional English country house design characteristics. Minor wear on the leather surface reflects the age of the item, complemented by polished woodwork throughout.

Emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these pieces draw inspiration from 18th-century classical revival designs by Thomas Sheraton and George Hepplewhite. They are characterised by lightweight proportions, rich mahogany timber, elegant satinwood or marquetry inlays, and fine leather writing surfaces.

Craftspeople primarily utilised solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often accented with boxwood, ebony, or satinwood stringing and marquetry. Tops frequently featured hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, while drawers were assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints and fitted with cast brass hardware.

Look for natural signs of age such as minor timber movement, hand-carved joinery, non-uniform dovetails in the drawer construction, and historical wear on the underside. Original brass hardware will often show natural patination, and hand-tooled leather inserts should exhibit subtle age-related wear rather than synthetic uniformity.

Place the table as a statement piece in an entryway, living room alcove, or home office. Pair it with a contemporary table lamp, minimalist artwork above, or modern desk accessories to create an eclectic contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean contemporary design.

Clean wood surfaces using a soft cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly along the grain. Condition leather tops using specialised leather balsam to prevent cracking, avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight or near radiators, and clean spills immediately with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
