The Aesthetic Movement, prominent in the late 19th century, prioritised art for arts sake, moving away from heavy Victorian ornamentation towards simpler, often Japan-inspired lines and natural materials.

Cabinet makers during this period predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and ebonised timber, frequently employing traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, genuine timber ageing such as patina and minor oxidisation, and construction hallmarks consistent with Victorian workshop production.

Pairing historical timber pieces with modern minimalist seating or placing them against neutral walls creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the rich grain and craftsmanship.

Maintain walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
