This Victorian chamber pot by Baker & Kent dates from 1920 in the English Country House style. Made from cream-coloured glazed earthenware, the surface has a smooth glossy finish decorated with transfer-printed green Neoclassical cameos framed by delicate pink floral garlands. A sturdy looped handle protrudes from the side, while the curved body rests on a flat base. The piece stands 14 cm high, 22 cm wide and 26 cm deep. Suitable for use in a home today, this charming decorative vessel looks striking placed on a deep window sill or styled as a floral vase on a rustic wooden table. The timeless aesthetic complements traditional and eclectic interiors alike, offering a subtle nod to historical domestic wares without requiring extensive restoration. Collectors of vintage earthenware appreciate the clear maker stamp on the base and the classic palette of cream and green tones.

Chamber pots were standard domestic objects used prior to the widespread implementation of indoor plumbing, kept primarily in bedrooms inside nightstands or commodes. During the nineteenth century, manufacturers produced decorative glazed ceramic versions as part of matching washstand sets to blend with bedroom decor.

Most nineteenth-century examples were constructed from durable earthenware or ironstone pottery finished with a clear glaze. Decorative elements were typically applied using transfer-printing techniques, allowing detailed floral or classical patterns to be transferred from copper plates onto the ceramic vessel before firing.

Authentic period pieces usually exhibit age-appropriate characteristics such as fine surface craquelure in the glaze, slight irregularities in the transfer pattern alignment, and maker marks or registration numbers stamped on the underside base. They also feature significant weight associated with heavy period earthenware.

In contemporary interior design, these vessels are frequently repurposed as decorative indoor planters for house plants, desktop storage vessels, or central displays on open shelving and bathroom counters.

Clean gently using warm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges that can scratch the glaze. Do not submerge pieces with severe crazing for prolonged periods, as moisture can seep beneath the surface and cause staining.
