This French Empire side table from 1880 combines walnut timber in warm brown tones with intricate floral marquetry inlay across the shaped top and central drawer front. Fine brass mouldings edge the drop-leaf top, while cast ormolu mounts adorn the shoulders of the slender cabriole legs, which terminate in small scroll feet. An ornate central handle graces the frieze drawer, and the two drop leaves extend the surface when extra space is required. Measuring 73 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, the table sits comfortably at the end of a sofa or in a drawing room corner to hold lamps, books, or decorative objects. In a modern interior, this versatile piece functions well as an occasional table or a decorative side unit in a living room, hallway, or study. The polished timber finish reflects light, highlighting the detailed floral wood-inlay patterns and the warm golden hue of the metal accents. The curved lines and classic proportions suit both period and contemporary room settings, providing practical surface area alongside distinct nineteenth-century French styling.

FAQs

Late 19th-century French marquetry tables often feature detailed wood veneers arranged in floral or geometric patterns, influenced by historical Louis XV and French Empire revival designs.

These pieces typically utilise hardwoods such as walnut or kingwood, adorned with brass or gilt-bronze mounts and contrasting decorative wood inlays.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut veneer work, natural patination on metal mounts, traditional joinery techniques, and slight natural shrinkage lines along veneer seams.

Position the table as a focal point in a hallway or living room alcove, pairing it with neutral decorative items to highlight the detailed woodwork.

Keep the wood veneer away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax sparingly.
