Description

An exceptional original antique Regency period mahogany leather top drum table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1800-1820 period.

It is of very fine quality, it is a large and impressive size. There are four drawers with original locks, they have unusual design whereby they spin outwards on a single pin, as seen in the images. The circular top has a tooled leather surface, it stands on a turned baluster base that leads to a platform base, with splayed sabre legs. The legs terminate in brass feet caps and casters, there are also fine quality gilt metal ormolu mounts on the base.

We have had this re-polished, the mahogany has acquired a gorgeous colour tone and patina. The condition is very good for its age, with some normal wear as expected for an item that it over 200 years old.

The Regency style flourished in Britain during the early 19th century, characterised by a revival of classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, coupled with an emphasis on fine timbers like mahogany.

These tables were typically constructed using solid and veneered mahogany, often featuring inset tooled leather surfaces, turned central pillars, and cast brass paw feet with castors.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawer boxes, traditional timber shrinkage patterns, and genuine age-related patination on the wood and brass hardware.

An antique drum table works effectively as a centre table in a spacious entrance hall or as a sophisticated desk, contrasting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist surroundings.

Maintain the timber using traditional beeswax and clean the leather top with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and direct sunlight to prevent fading and drying.
