FAQs

A Sutherland table is a narrow, dropleaf table designed to fold flat when not in use, originating in Victorian Britain during the mid-19th century and named after the Duchess of Sutherland.

These pieces typically feature a solid pine or mahogany carcase veneered with highly figured burr walnut, accented with boxwood or marquetry inlay, and supported by turned wooden columns and ceramic castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails where applicable, natural shrinkage cracks in the timber, traditional French polish finishes, and original brass or ceramic castors beneath the feet.

A compact drop-leaf table works well as a versatile accent piece in a sitting room or hallway, providing functional surface area when fully extended while taking up minimal space folded down.

Maintain the timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
