Description

This is an attractive George III Mahogany snap top top table with a wonderful rich colour and a lovely antique patina. The table has a turned column design with tripod base on pad feet and a tilt action dished top with its original hand forged catch to the underside.

This is in really nice clean condition and in good order overall. It has had a small historic repair to one of the pad feet as shown but sympathetically and robustly restored. The colour is a delight and the patina literally glows. This dates from around 1820 and measures 72 cms high by 63 cms in diameter.

The George III period, spanning from 1760 to 1820, is characterised by refined classical proportions, excellent craftsmanship, and the predominant use of imported timbers such as mahogany. Furniture from this era often reflects the influence of prominent designers like Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton.

These tables were typically constructed from solid timbers like mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring a turned central pillar supported by a tripod base. The top was mounted on a birdcage or block mechanism, allowing the surface to tilt vertically when not in use for convenient storage.

Authentication relies on examining the timber for age-appropriate patina, hand-cut dovetails or joinery, traditional pegging, and signs of manual turning on the central column. Genuine older pieces often exhibit subtle irregularities and wear patterns consistent with centuries of use rather than machine-made precision.

An antique pedestal table adds warmth and historical contrast to contemporary spaces when placed beside a neutral sofa or in an unused corner. It functions well as a display surface for ceramics, a reading lamp, or simply left tilted to showcase the decorative wood grain on the underside.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the natural finish and protective patina.
