Nineteenth-century French farmhouse tables were traditionally utilitarian pieces crafted for rural kitchens and workrooms, characterised by sturdy timber construction, simple rectangular tops, and robust structural stretchers designed to withstand heavy daily use.

These tables were predominantly constructed from regional hardwoods native to France, most notably solid elm, oak, and occasionally fruitwoods, selected for their density, grain pattern, and resilience against wear.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-sawn board variations, authentic surface patination accumulated over decades of use, and signs of manual woodworking tools rather than modern machinery.

Pairing a rustic wooden table with modern seating creates a balanced focal point, contrasting the organic texture and warm patina of aged timber with clean lines and minimalist architecture.

Preserve antique elm by avoiding direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations which can cause wood to split. Clean only with a dry or barely damp lint-free cloth, and occasionally nourish the grain with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicon-based polishes.
