Description

A superb antique Edwardian mahogany leather top desk, in the Georgian revival style. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

It is of great quality and is a very useful size, quite wide and not too deep from front to back. There are dummy drawers on the reverse, so this looks identical front and back, it can be used as a free standing item. This has a very smart and refined design, there is beautiful pierced fretwork under the corners where the legs meet the top. The top has a gorgeous inset leather writing surface with tooled edges.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There are some minor marks and indentations here and there, commensurate for age. Overall this has a wonderful patina.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, often lighter in form and colour than heavy Victorian pieces, frequently drew inspiration from earlier 18th-century Sheraton, Chippendale, and Hepplewhite designs.

These desks were typically constructed from imported hardwoods such as solid mahogany and satinwood, frequently featuring hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, solid brass drawer pulls, and dovetail joinery.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer boxes, natural timber shrinkage, uniform patination on the brass hardware, and the correct period characteristics consistent with the early 20th century.

Integrating an antique desk into a contemporary scheme involves pairing it with minimalist seating to create visual contrast, allowing the rich wood grain and traditional craftsmanship to serve as a focal point.

Preservation requires keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent timber bleaching and leather cracking, cleaning the wood with a high-quality beeswax, and occasionally conditioning the leather insert with neutral wax.
