Victorian furniture is characterised by a revival of historic styles, intricate carvings, and the extensive use of richly figured veneers such as burr walnut, reflecting the industrial manufacturing capabilities and aesthetic tastes of the 19th century.

These pieces typically feature a solid secondary wood such as pine or mahogany as a carcase, overlaid with highly decorative burr walnut veneers. Construction often incorporates hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and turned or carved solid supports.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the grain patterns of the burr veneer for natural irregularities, checking for period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut screws or early metal fixings, and observing natural ageing like oxidation and shrinkage cracks in the wood.

An antique occasional table provides warmth and texture when paired with contemporary seating or minimalist decor, acting as a focal point that bridges historical craftsmanship with modern functional design.

Burr walnut should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and lifting. Maintenance involves dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
