Foldover card and games tables gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as formal parlour furniture designed for evening entertainments such as whist, bridge, and chess.

These tables were typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, often featuring secondary woods for internal framing, precision brass marquetry inlay, and hand-carved pedestal bases.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber shrinkage, hand-cut dovetailing, traditional animal glues, oxidation patterns on the brass elements, and period-correct mechanical hinges or swivel mechanisms.

A foldover table functions effectively as a versatile console against a wall or in an entryway, opened partially or fully to display decorative objects or provide a compact writing surface.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and applying occasional natural beeswax polish while avoiding synthetic chemical cleaners.
