FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where they were used in the dining halls, known as refectories, for communal meals. Over subsequent centuries, the design evolved from heavy, fixed monastic boards into domestic dining furniture utilised across country estates and farmhouses.

Authentic period tables are constructed primarily from solid English or European oak, often joined using traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. The timber is typically quartersawn, revealing distinctive medullary rays and grain patterns that contribute to its structural longevity.

Authentication involves examining the underside and joinery for hand-tool marks, uneven board widths, and natural shrinkage cracks associated with age. Genuine pieces exhibit period-appropriate wear patterns, oxidisation, and hand-cut peg fixings rather than modern mechanical fasteners.

Pairing a heavy timber table with contemporary minimalist seating or industrial lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition of eras. Keeping the tabletop relatively uncluttered highlights the natural grain and historical character of the wood within a modern setting.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding placement near direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional treatment with traditional beeswax help nourish the wood without damaging the patina.
