Victorian furniture from the 19th century is characterised by eclectic revivals of historical motifs, intricate hand-carving, and the use of rich timbers such as walnut and mahogany.

These pieces typically utilised solid hardwoods for the structural framing, often veneered with highly figured burr walnut on the tabletop to display complex grain patterns, joined with traditional mortise and tenon or dovetail joints.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery, old patina, and the construction of the central pillar and tripod base assembly for period-appropriate hand tools and fixings.

Pairing historical timber pieces with contemporary upholstery and clean architectural lines creates a balanced, layered interior scheme that highlights the natural warmth and texture of the antique wood.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
