FAQs

Ceramic and pottery animal figures have been produced across Europe for centuries, with a significant surge in popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as decorative mantelpiece ornaments.

These figures are typically crafted from earthenware or majolica clay, hand-painted with ceramic glazes, and often highlighted with metallic details like gold lustre before being kiln-fired.

Authenticity is assessed through crazing in the glaze, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, base wear indicative of age, and sometimes historical makers marks or registration numbers.

They can be displayed symmetrically on a mantelpiece, styled on bookshelf styling tiers, or placed on an entryway console to add a touch of traditional character to contemporary spaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as this can damage the aged glaze and hand-painted surface details.
