Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Lacca povera, translating to poor peoples lacquer, originated in 18th-century Venice as an affordable European alternative to imported Asian lacquerware, utilising paper cut-outs pasted onto wooden surfaces and varnished.

These pieces typically feature local European hardwoods such as pine or beech, constructed with traditional joinery, hand-turned legs, and layered paper prints sealed beneath multiple coats of protective varnish or lacquer.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the wood aging, hand-mixed varnishes showing characteristic craquelure, authentic hand-coloured paper engravings, and period-appropriate joinery techniques.

Pair this historic piece with minimalist or neutral modern furnishings to allow the intricate decorative surface to function as a focal point without overwhelming the space.

Protect the fragile varnish finish by keeping the item out of direct sunlight, avoiding moisture and chemical cleaning agents, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
