FAQs

The George III style spans the mid-to-late 18th century, characterised by a transition from heavy mahogany pieces influenced by Thomas Chippendale to lighter, more neoclassical designs inspired by architects like Robert Adam, featuring delicate inlay, tapered legs, and classical motifs.

Master craftsmen typically utilised dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany for the primary structure, often incorporating secondary timbers like oak or pine for internal frames, complemented by decorative veneer work and contrasting wood stringing.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional timber shrinkage, historical tool marks, original hinges, and the natural oxidisation and patina accumulated on the secondary woods over centuries.

These versatile pieces can be placed against a wall as a console table in a hallway or living space when closed, or opened to function as a focal point for display, offering both historical character and functional surface area.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the finish, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
