1900 - 1920
Sold 4 February 2025 · Carse Antiques
This “Early Scottish Wemyss Hens Tankard” found a buyer.

It was listed by Carse Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Early Scottish Wemyss ware Large tankard with the earliest red rim and handle. Being an early piece it is beautifully painted in great detail in the black hens pattern. I have another slightly later black hens tankard in stock and it is no where near as well painted as this example. With the red rim this dates to the late 19th century. Condition is pretty good, there is minor staining and it looks like there has been an old minor repair to the handle. Impressed mark to the base.

Wemyss Ware is a type of Scottish pottery produced from the late 19th century onwards, initially by the Robert Heron & Son pottery at the Fife Pottery in Kirkcaldy, renowned for its hand-painted animal, fruit, and floral decorations.

Wemyss pieces are typically crafted from earthenware clay, featuring a white slip ground that is hand-painted under a clear lead glaze, often incorporating characteristic sponge work and brush details.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-painted artisan signatures or impressed factory marks such as Wemyss or RH & S, alongside distinctive crazing in the glaze and painterly, naturalistic brushwork.

Such decorative items add character when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or in glazed cabinets, introducing historical texture and handcrafted charm to both traditional and modern spaces.

Maintain these pieces by keeping them out of direct sunlight, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding immersion in water or dishwashers to protect the aged glaze and delicate painted surfaces.
