Flow blue is a type of white earthenware featuring cobalt blue transfer prints, which purposely bled into the glaze during the firing process to create a hazy effect. This ceramic style originated in Staffordshire, England, and reached peak popularity during the Victorian era between the 1830s and 1900s.

These pieces were typically crafted from ironstone or earthenware clay bodies, shaped via moulding, and hand-finished with applied handles. The intricate patterns were transferred from copper plates onto tissue paper and applied to the ceramic before glazing and high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature characteristic glaze blurring, crazing of the ceramic surface, and historical potter marks or pattern names stamped on the underside. Examination under magnification reveals the characteristic soft edges of the transfer print rather than sharp modern printing dots.

Such large vessels function effectively as floor-standing planters for large indoor foliage, decorative storage for rolled textiles or logs, or as statement centrepieces on large sideboards and console tables.

Clean these items exclusively by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasives or soaking that might worsen existing glaze crazing. Display them away from direct sunlight and drastic temperature fluctuations to protect the ceramic body.
