Superb Example of a Brass and Mahogany Vacuum Pump

19th century
Description

A wonderful example of a double valve demonstration vacuum pump with brass and mahogany columns, decorative finials, and the raised larger plate supported columns, with a smaller one to the rear, signed on the engraved plate by Ladd, Penton place, Walworth.

The brass work with the original lacquer and some of the original accessories are even signed as well. These include a syphon gauge, a Magdeburg sphere, a glass blub with valve and a hand pump. All contained in an oak traveling case which explains the fantastic original condition the instrument is in.

Ladd is listed working in the mid 19th century although this model is the same as the ones made by Adams in the 18th century.

Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.
