French faience refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in France from the late sixteenth century onwards, characterised by a white opaque glaze decorated with hand-painted metallic oxide pigments.

These pieces were shaped from coarse local earthenware clay, fired once, dipped in an opaque tin glaze to form a pale surface, painted by hand with mineral-based glazes, and subjected to a second firing.
