Description

Delightful Japanese Showa era (1920-30s) bamboo charcoal tea ceremony basket (hakosumitori), signed Shokusai, possibly a descendant of the great Hayakawa Shokusai (1815-1897). It is an unusual intricate design made from tightly hand-woven aged bamboo, with a beautifully formed bamboo handle wrapped at the joints that fasten it to the body. Only traces of the ‘tar’ lining remain, which prevented charcoal dust from falling out. Signed on the bottom of the basket.

The basket Is in pristine condition and has a lovely patina – no damage, missing elements or colour loss. Measures 15cm (6in) high x 18.5cm (7 1/4in).
