Large Imposing Early 20th Century Mexican Day of the Dead Mask

1920 - 1940
Description

This is a most imposing, very large carved and hand painted ‘Day of the Dead’ mask from Mexico dating from around 1900. The mask has long curling horns, bulging eyes below a deeply furrowed brow, large pierced nose with flared nostrils and mouth with fanged teeth, decorated in muted red white and black pigments.

The day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd widely observed in Mexico where it developed and is also observed in other places especially by people of Mexican heritage. Although related to simultaneous Christian remembrances for Hallowtide it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. The multi day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died.

This is a super example with an amazing look and loads of character.

It is substantial in size measuring 75 cms high 44 cms wide by 35 cms deep.

Provenance

Property of a Gentleman.

From the residual contents of Stanhope Castle, Bishop Auckland.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
