Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The shield sits on a red background. The work has suffered from heat damage over time and has a heavy craquelure. The frame is oak with wonderfully detailed carving to the corners of oak branches with leaves and acorns. The oak has a great rich deep untouched patina. I suspect this piece formed part of an elaborate fireplace hence the heat damaged and dark oak. The whole has a great look of the early gothic revival and is in great untouched condition. C.1850.
