Small Heraldic Oil Painting in Carved Oak Frame

A very interesting and decorative little oil painting of a heraldic shield in a fine and intricately carved oak frame. The work is in oil on canvas laid to board and shows a shield partitioned by a black chevron and occupied by three shells. The shield sits on a red background. The work has suffered from heat damage over time and has a heavy craquelure. The frame is oak with wonderfully detailed carving to the corners of oak branches with leaves and acorns. The oak has a great rich deep untouched patina. I suspect this piece formed part of an elaborate fireplace hence the heat damaged and dark oak. The whole has a great look of the early gothic revival and is in great untouched condition. C.1850.
