Sampler Victorian Rare Ellen Catchpole 1873

19th century
Description

Here we have a stunning and rare Victorian Sampler. The sampler collection and was purchased from a reputable auction house. I will send the auction paperwork with this sampler to the buyer. The sampler has a rare black and red ground and is of exceptional quality and execution. The sampler was made by Ellen Catchpole of Guiltcross Norfolk who as the sampler suggests was 13 on the 8th of may 1873. There is a short sweet verse that reads The lors of a friend is much, The lors of time is more, The lors of christ is a lore we never can restore. The colours are still vibrant and on a deep red (border) and black ground they look even more spectacular. There is a lovely deep red border with styalised flowers. The main body of the sampler has wonderful art nouveau style flowers to the top including a depiction of an English rose in the middle as this has a tiny crown stitched on the top. there are birds either side of the Rose head and birds either side of the base. Either side of the verse there is a bird and what looks like a Welsh dragon. the next section has a sense of the far east with what looks like a pagoda and a lion. There is also a house on this section. The most interesting part for me is at the bottom where we have a kangaroo and what looks like a Beaver maybe references to North America and Australia. In between these two animals is an anchor which may suggest travel to these countries. It is known that the girl had family in Australia at this time. On top of the fantastic condition and excellent provenance the sampler sits in what i believe to be its original Oak cushioned frame with original glass. This sampler is the best example i have seen and is a collecters dream. A wonderful sampler of great proportions in a beautiful golden oak frame ready for your home. The frame is approx 20 inches by 25 inches. The sampler is approx 13 1/2 inches by 18 1/2 inches

This item can be viewed at Cloverleaf Home Interiors where it can be collected from. Alternatively it can be delivered anywhere mainland UK for a fee of £18.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
