This pair of nineteenth century Dutch Rozenburg ceramic figurines portrays a fisherman and a fisherwoman standing on green rectangular pedestals, marked for the factory with a date of 1894. Modelled in earthenware with a high-gloss polychrome glaze, the figures wear traditional regional clothing decorated in brown, blue, yellow and red tones, complemented by dark brown footwear and a woven-effect fish basket held by the female figure. Each piece measures 20 cm high, 10 cm wide, 8 cm deep, with a 6 cm square base. Display these decorative earthenware figures on a mantelpiece to add colourful heritage character and traditional folk motifs to a room interior today.

FAQs

Founded in The Hague in 1883, the Rozenburg manufactory became renowned for producing earthenware and porcelain featuring distinct Art Nouveau forms and intricate hand-painted decoration, operating until its closure in 1917.

These figures were cast using fine earthenware clay, fired at high temperatures, and treated with lead or tin glazes enhanced by hand-painted polychrome metal oxides to create distinct colouration.

Authentic pieces feature stamped or painted factory marks, typically including a stork symbol, the company name, year codes, and initials corresponding to specific decorators and painters.

Decorative pottery statuettes are styled on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or sideboard tops to add architectural variation, historical context, and tactile interest to modern display surfaces.

Dust gently using a soft-bristled brush or dry microfibre cloth; avoid immersing porous earthenware in water or using abrasive chemical detergents that could compromise delicate glazes.
