Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This vintage European miniature travelling chess set dates from 1930 and belongs to a gentleman's library design aesthetic. The ensemble comprises a folding leather board with alternating pegged brown and cream squares, alongside a matching chestnut brown leather case decorated with gilt tooling and the stamped word ajedrez. The surface displays fine stitching around the edges and grain texture across the leather panels. Measuring 4.5 cm high, 17.5 cm wide and 11 cm deep, the compact case and folding board form a self-contained portable unit for gaming on the move. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement on an office desk, library table or bookcase shelf as a decorative collector's item or a functional game for travel. The rich brown tones and gold-stamped lettering coordinate easily with traditional leather-bound books and classic wooden furniture. The folding design allows the set to close securely into its protective case when not in use.

FAQs

Miniature travelling chess sets gained popularity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, allowing players to continue games whilst journeying by coach, train, or ship. These compact sets featured pegged or magnetic pieces to secure positions during movement.

High-grade examples were crafted using natural materials such as embossed leather, turned bone, boxwood, and ebony. Cases were frequently lined with fabric and decorated with gold leaf or blind tooling.

Authentic period examples display signs of age-appropriate wear to the leather, genuine hand-cut bone or wooden components, and historical maker marks or foil embossing in native languages such as English, French, or Spanish.

A vintage travelling chess set adds texture and historical interest when placed open on a home office desk, arranged within a curated bookshelf display, or paired with brass desk ornaments in a study.

Keep the leather away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Apply a neutral museum-grade leather wax sparingly with a soft cloth to nourish the surface and preserve the original finish.
