English Victorian Bookslide / Bookends in Tunbridge Ware C.1860

Description

A really decorative antique Tunbridgeware book slide, with the plinth made from Mahogany and Rosewood and the sides and fronts of the ends created in highly decorative Burl Ash / Hungarian Ash / Silky Australian Oak (all sorts of names are used to describe this highly decorative wavy timber).

One Tunbridge panel is in the tumbling block design and the other an intricate mosaic Rose. Originating in the Georgian town of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, visitors began buying wooden souvenirs from the woodworkers of surrounding areas such as Tonbrige and Speldhurst.

During the 1830's James Burrows developed the tessellated mosaic technique which became the most well known type of Tunbridge Ware.

Of course as the name suggests, the bookslide can be expanded in size ranging from 9 3/4" to 16 3/4". While closed this highly collectible desk accessory measures 10 3/4" x 5".
