It was listed by Aramis Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An early Victorian turned fruitwood or boxwood truncheon with painted royal insignia surrounded by the words Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense. The truncheon has a turned green and leather wrist strap. The numbers 78 and 102 and initial S are incised into the truncheon just below the grasp. The painted royal insignia occupies the central part of the truncheon with deep blu, red and gold paint. There is wear so the paint has worn in places but the quarter shields are clear. It is likely that the tip of truncheon would have been painted with the initials of the reigning monarch but this truncheon has seen life and been used. Still, the wooden object is in beautiful condition and the signs of wear only prove age.

Painted police truncheons date back centuries as symbols of authority for constables and law enforcement officers in Britain, often featuring royal crests, regional numbers, and distinctive colourful finishes to denote official status.

These items were typically turned on a lathe from dense native hardwoods such as lignum vitae, oak, or beech, often finished with hand-painted polychrome decoration and fitted with a leather wrist strap for security.

Authentic pieces generally display genuine wear, period-appropriate hand-painted royal cyphers or regimental numbers, authentic patina on the timber and leather, and tool marks consistent with nineteenth-century woodturning techniques.

An antique truncheon makes a striking display piece when mounted on a wall bracket, placed within a cabinet of curiosities, or styled on a desk in a study to add historical interest and texture.

Preservation involves keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to protect the aged timber and delicate painted surfaces, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to the wood if necessary.
