Taxidermy. A Pair of Barn Owls by Hutchings of Aberystwyth

1900 - 1920
Description

Circa 1910. In typical ebonized case, with gilt slip and glazed to three sides. Typically, unlabelled as was the majority of this firms work.

61cm high x 45cm wide x 17.5cm deep

J Hutchins (1860-1942) is the most famous of the Welsh taxidermists and probably the most recognizable taxidermist of all. His style, economic use of the space and the exemplary way he preserved his specimens is remarkable, out of all the Victorian taxidermist none are probably better prepared to stand the test of time. If it’s the country farm house look you are after then look no further than Hutchings, just like the time-honored Aga and oak dresser.

Or my own publication “A Record of Spicer’s” by R. Chinnery published in 2001 that has a small review of Victorian taxidermy, nicely illustrated with a couple of exceptional Hutchings cases.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
