Georgian Needlework Titled ‘tancred’

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine Georgian needlework in silk and wool on a silk backing. The scene depicted is most likely from the play Tancred and Sigismunda written in 1745 as the word Tancred is being inscribed on the central tree by the female figure. The scene is typically Georgian pastoral with wonderful detail in the figures and the sheep and dog. The condition is quite excellent, there are no losses or tears only the slight discolouration of time. The gilt frame is the original as is the glass with its verre eglomise border. The whole is in very good untouched condition and a wonderful example of Georgian needlework. C.1780.
