FAQs

A Victorian work table, also known as a sewing or needlework table, is a small piece of multifunctional furniture designed during the 19th century to house sewing implements, crafts, and writing materials, often featuring a suspended fabric bag underneath.

These tables were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, frequently featuring decorative veneers, turned wooden supports, and suspended silk, velvet, or damask fabric bags.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-specific joinery, traditional hand-turned wooden components, genuine wood grain patterns with natural ageing, and period hardware such as brass escutcheons and working locks.

This versatile piece functions effectively as a compact side table or bedside cabinet, bringing historical character and rich wooden tones into both traditional and modern living spaces.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the wood finish and fabric bag, and periodically applying appropriate wax polish to nourish the timber.
