This 19th-century William IV work table combines functional craft and classical proportions within an English Country House design style. Constructed from solid rosewood and finished with figured rosewood veneers, the piece displays a dark brown timber tone alongside a pleated cream fabric basket. Structural details visible across the piece include carved scroll supports, detailed scroll feet, and neat edge mouldings framing the square top. The table measures 77 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, offering a practical footprint suited to various domestic settings. In modern interior arrangements, this versatile item suits placement at the end of a sofa or serves effectively as a lamp table next to seating. The integrated deep bag provides concealed storage, while the compact surface accommodates daily reading materials, lighting, or decorative objects. The solid construction and traditional aesthetic allow the table to integrate seamlessly into traditional sitting rooms, studies, or reading corners alongside existing period or transitional furniture.

A William IV work table is a specialized piece of occasional furniture produced in Britain between 1830 and 1837. Designed primarily for sewing and needlework, these tables feature compact proportions, storage compartments or fabric baskets, and robust classical carving typical of the period.

These tables were commonly crafted from high-grade hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, selected for their pronounced grain patterns. The lower gathering baskets were typically constructed with silk, pleated fabric, or pleated paper lining over a wooden frame.

Authentic William IV furniture features heavy, bold proportions that bridge the Regency and Victorian styles. Key identifiers include architectural turnings, carved acanthus leaves, scroll feet, and rich, dark timber veneers like figure-grained rosewood.

An antique work table functions effectively as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa. Its small footprint and distinct silhouette allow it to serve as a decorative focal point in hallways, living rooms, or reading nooks.

Rosewood surfaces should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent bleaching and dusted regularly with a soft cloth. Original fabric components require delicate vacuuming using a low-suction mesh attachment to avoid disturbing aged fibers.
