Description

A superb quality Staunton pattern chess set dating from the mid 19th Century. The pieces are hand carved from ebony and boxwood and weighted in the base. There is a complete set although we believe one ebony pawn has been later made as it is not weighted but has been beautifully turned to match the set.

There are no marks on the set in regards to the maker and it does not come with a box.

The set has been well used which has created a wonderful patina although the pieces are not without some small losses. There are no major damages but there are chips around the bases of some of the pieces, the kings are missing the cross on the top and one horse is missing its lower jaw. All of this has been photographed as best as we can.

The kings are just shy of 4" tall and would have likely been 4" with the top turning. The base is 1 3/4" (4.5cm) in diameter.
