Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
There is a top layer, fitted with an array of tools. This lifts out to reveal further tools underneath.
The set appears complete, and in undamaged condition. Each piece is marked with makers name. There are some 34 items, including Capital Saws; Trepanning implements; Tracheotomy cannula; forceps; dissecting hooks; Wire; thread and various scalpels and blades. Each has its own place-holder, plus some additional needles and a fine quality penknife or Bistoury with replacement blades (makers name F. Maw & Son, London). The tool handles have been ebonised, or stained dark. The lift-out upper mahogany tray reveals further tools underneath, again almost all fitted in dark purple velvet sections.
This is a fine example and similar to one in the British Museum. Arnold and Sons were instrument makers to HM British Government; Agents for the Crown Colonies; Honourable Council for India; St Bartholomews Hospital, London; The Surgical Aid Society and the Principal Provincial and `Colonial Hospitals. Address 35-36 West Smithfield, London. The design of this set was made obsolete in 1880's and 1890's with the introduction of aseptic surgery and the introduction of sterilisation by boiling. (The wooden handles and cracks in the wood harboured bacteria).
This set dates from the period 1830-40. Although an almost identical set dated 1810-1812 is in the British Museum.
