Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Refectory tables originated in monasteries during the medieval period, where they were used by monks for communal dining in the refectory. Their long, narrow proportions were designed to fit efficiently into large dining halls while accommodating many diners.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak using robust joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. They typically feature heavy stretcher bases to provide stability for the long, thick timber tops.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age such as hand-adzed top surfaces, shrinkage cracks, peg construction, and uneven patination resulting from centuries of use. Examining the underside and joint construction helps determine the age of the timber and hardware.

Pairing a heavy wooden table with contemporary dining chairs creates a striking balance between old and new. Keeping the tabletop uncluttered with simple linen runners allows the natural grain and historic character of the wood to remain the focal point.

Antique oak should be kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help nourish the timber and maintain its protective finish.
