Regency Period 2 Book Elephant Folio 1st Edition Set of Sir William Colt Hoare's Ancient History of Wiltshire with Numerous Full Page Engraved Plates

Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd baronet FRS , (1758-1838) was an avid plant collector, antiquarian, archaeologist, artist, author and third owner of the Stourhead Estate in WIlshire. He wrote a number of books and his Ancient History of Wiltshire, dealing with the prehistoric and Roman periods, is considered his most important work. Vol I, covering South Wiltshire,, was published in 1812 by William Miller and Vol II containing two volumes in one, covers North Wiltshire and The Roman period and was published in 1819 by Lackington, Hushes, Harding, Mavor & Jones. Both books were printed by W Bulmer & Co.

These two first editions, ex libris The Incorporated Law Society, are uniformly bound in polished half calf against buckram covered boards. The spines are arranged as 6 compartments by 5 raised bands and are gilt decorated as are the top page edges. The end papers are marbled and there are over 100 plates, some folding and the order of plates in each volume confirms all plates are present as called for.

Externally, marks, some bumping to board edges and corners, scuffs, wear to spine heads, loss to gilding and a little splitting to hinges. Internally tightly bound, some age toning, some marks and varying degrees of foxing, an occasional tear to page margins, 2 plates with tears both contained along the vertical inner plate border. Both volumes with a small circular stamps of Incorporated Law Society which is also lettered in gilt to the base of each spine. This is a large and heavy set - approximate combined unpackaged weight 13kgs.
