William Hazlitt's Life of Napoleon Buonaparte Complete in 4 Handsome Leather Bound Books Dated 1852

William Hazlitt (1778 –1830) was an English essayist, drama and literary critic, painter, social commentator, and philosopher, who is now considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language. He befriended many people who are now part of the 19th century literary canon, including Charles and Mary Lamb, Stendhal, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Keats. Hazlitt’s ambitious work The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte was started when he was in France and was originally published between 1828 and 1830.

This set, complete in 4 volumes, is the second edition, revised by his son, also William, and published in 1852 by the Office of The Illustrated London Library, 227 Strand. The preface explains that the 2nd edition took so long to be published due to the time that it took his son to trace the ownership of the copyright.

Handsomely bound in full green calf with the spines arranged in 6 compartments by 5 raised bands with the gilt lettered title labels within 2 panels and the remainder elaborately gilt decorated. The boards are also gilt decorated to the perimeter with an adjacent blind tooled inner border. Both the end papers and page edges are marbled. Full page frontispiece monochrome illustrations to each volume.

Approximate height 19.8cms, depth some 13.2cms and combined shelf coverage around 11.5cms.

Condition: Overall in very good condition. Externally some marks and shelf wear, including some small areas of scuffing, some loss to gilding, some discolouration to boards and some bumping to a number of corners. Internally the half titles have been removed, the frontispiece illustrations and title pages are foxed as are some of the preliminary pages. A handsome set with an unusual design to the spines.
